Greensburg- Donald Allen Richards, 89, died July 4, 2018 in the Edwards County Medical Center, Kinsley, Kansas. He was born August 11, 1928 in Scandia, Kansas the son of Lester Scott and Muriel Olive (Brown) Richards. He had lived in Scandia, Kansas City, Lyons, Beloit, Liberal. He had lived in Greensburg, Kansas since 1966. Don was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Navy as a radio operator in Naval Aviation. Prior to enlisting Don worked as an auto mechanic and in auto body repair. After his military service he graduated mortuary school in Dallas, Texas. He was a Funeral Director and Embalmer for Miller Mortuary, Liberal, Kansas for eleven years before joining Fleener’s Inc. in Greensburg, becoming a co-owner of the Funeral Home / Furniture Store operation. Donald was active in community politics and served as Kiowa County Commissioner from 2000-2012. His memberships include the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion (Past Commander), fifty-year member and past president of the Greensburg Lions Club, past President of the Greensburg Chamber of Commerce, a sixty year member of the Kiowa Lodge #293 Masonic Lodge and Star of Hope Chapter #193 of the Eastern Star, and the Kiowa County Senior Center, all of Greensburg, and the National and Kansas Funeral Directors Associations. On April 7, 1951 Donald married Wanda Bookless in Scandia. She preceded him in death April 27, 2004. He is survived by a special friend Mary Linenbroker, Greensburg, three sons Douglas Richards and wife Sherry, Dennis Richards and wife Shanna, Mark Richards, a daughter Marcia Kelly and husband Robert, ten Grandchildren Darren Richards and wife Lori, Kyle Donovan, Kasey Donovan and fiancé Laurie, Kayla Donovan and fiancé Dakota, Kara Mannebach and husband Darryl, Kymberly Burnett and husband Andy, Sara Speer and husband Eric, Jared Kelly, Scott Kelly and Kenzie Richards, and thirteen Great-grandchildren. Don was also preceded in death by a Granddaughter Rashelle Kelly, granddaughter-in-law Kellie Donovan and a sister Norma Jean Nelson. Funeral Services and Celebration of Donald’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 8, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, Greensburg with Rev Jeffrey D. Blackburn and Pastor Chu presiding. Burial with Masonic and Military Honors will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg. A visitation will be held 5:00 -7:00 p.m. Saturday at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to the Kiowa Lodge Masonic Lodge and the Kiowa County Senior Center, both of Greensburg, in care of Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main St., PO Box 41, Greensburg, Kansas 67054.
