Helen Lucille Hayse

Mullinville- Helen Lucille (Alford) Hayse, 94, died January 29, 2017 at Western Plains Medical Center, Dodge City, KS. She was born February 26, 1922 the daughter of Wayne C. and Edith Lucille (Sherer) Alford. Helen lived 90 years within 3 miles of the place of her birth south, of Mullinville, Kansas. She graduated from Mullinville High School in 1940 and attended Fort Hays State University the following summer and fall. On December 19, 1940 Helen married Nathan B. Hayse, Jr. at her parent’s home. They were one of five married couples on the FHSU campus. They were married 64 years at the time of Nathan’s death December 24, 2004. Her memberships included the Mullinville United Methodist Church where she served as church historian and local and district UMW committees, Federation was a big part of her life. She joined Jr. PTD in 1941 and was honored for 75 years, receiving the Hawes Award from the state president in 2005, a Charter Member of the Southwestern Royals 4-H Club serving as a leader for over 20 years, Kiowa County and District 6 Farm Bureau- recognized as Woman of the Year in 1964, Past president of the Council of Clubs, Past president and Vice president of the Kiowa County Hospital Auxiliary, Past President of YWCA of Mullinville, Past President of Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, Auxiliary 3 years, Past President of Mom’s Club- Kappa Delta Sorority at Kansas State University, Charter member of Cowbells Organization, Master Homemakers Guild. She and Nathan sponsored high school dances in their home. Helen felt it was an honor and a privileged to be called “Mom” by so many. Helen is survived by one son Paul W. Hayse, Mullinville, two daughters Georgiana Bradshaw, Dodge City, Kansas and Fran Zerby, Manhattan, Kansas, eight Grandchildren, eighteen Great- grandchildren, and nine Great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Melva Bernard, a sister Marilla Blau, a grandson William Nathan Hayse, and two son-in-laws Bill Bradshaw and Joe Zerby. Funeral services and celebration of Helen’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Mullinville United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Fillmore presiding. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Mullinville. A visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fleener Funeral Home.
