Greensburg-James Phillip Dowell, a compassionate father, brother and son, passed away on May 22. He was a great lover of literature, music, movies, and the arts who read widely and passionately. Jim was a raconteur and renaissance man extraordinaire who possessed a great wit and spirit. He was born in Pratt Kansas on March 17, 1945 to Richard A. Dowell and Shirley Asher Dowell. He graduated valedictorian from Greensburg High in 1963 and a was Summerfield Scholar at the University of Kansas where he graduated with honors in 1967. He went on to obtain a Masters of Education from the University of Tulsa and taught English, History, and Physical Education at The University of Tulsa School for Gifted Children. For the last 17 years, he was a team leader and master reader for national standardized test scoring company in Coldwater, KS. He is survived by his two sons, James Dowell and his wife Oana Martin of Madison, WI, and Benjamin Dowell of Queens, NY; his two sisters, Mary Dowell Cukjati and her husband John Cukjati of Colorado Springs, CO, and Peggy Frederick of Haviland, KS; and his two granddaughters, Gabriela and Zoe Dowell of Madison, WI. He is preceded in death by his mother Shirley, his father Richard, and his brother Michael. Memorial services and a celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on May 26 at the Wellsford Community Church, Wellsford. A wake will be held at Cannonball Bar and Grill at 5 pm on May 25.
