Mullinville- Melva Lucille Bernard, 71, died May 9, 2013 at Hanover Hospital, Hanover Kansas. She was born March 5, 1942 in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Helen Lucille (Alford) and Nathan Berkley Hayse, Jr.. Melva graduated from Mullinville High School in 1960, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays College in Home Economics, and later went back and earned a Associate’s degree from Dodge City Community College in Accounting. She was a sales clerk and cashier for Walmart before retiring. She had lived in Mullinville since 1982. She carried news papers for the Wichita Eagle, Hutch News and the Dodge City Globe. She did embroidering and traveled to craft shows. Memberships include the Mullinville United Methodist Church, and was a long time member of the Kiowa County Fair Board and 4H supporter. She is survived by her mother Helen Hayse, Mullinville, four daughters Katy and husband John Bechtold, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Gidget and husband Ode Lehman, Washington, Kansas, Lori Flax, Fulton, Missouri, Teresa and husband Chris Atkins, Hanover, twelve Grandchildren, one Great-grandchild, a brother Paul Hayse, Mullinville, two sisters Georgiana Bradshaw, Dodge City, and Fran and husband Joe Zerby, Manhattan, Kansas, and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and a nephew William Nathan Hayse. Funeral Services and celebration of Melva’s life will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday May 14, 2013 at the Mullinville United Methodist Church, Mullinville, with Rev. Mark Fillmore officiating. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg.
