Most memorable event?
I’d say the most startling event of my life was the Greensburg Tornado in 2007. The house was ripped apart around me. I was buried in the wreckage, but strangely, the wreckage wasn’t my enemy, but my friend. It kept my late mother, her two cats, and me alive by holding us fast against the tremendous screaming winds of the tornado. And then, silence. No sirens, no rescuers, just silence. I dug us out of the wreckage. Eventually, after a seemingly endless time in that silence, setting my poor demented mother in a salvaged chair and digging out the cats to set them in their carriers beside her, help arrived.
