Robert G. "Doc" Skaggs

Greensburg – Robert Glenn Skaggs, DVM, 94, passed away peacefully early morning on March 21, 2025, at his home in Greensburg, Kansas. ‘Doc’ Skaggs, as he was affectionately known, was born December 11, 1930, in Sharon, Kansas, the son of Lonnie and Claudine (Werner) Skaggs. He grew up working on a farm and rode his pony to school. Robert graduated from Attica High School in 1948. He was a United States Veteran, serving in the Navy aboard the USS Frank Knox in the Korean War. He attended Kansas State University and started a Veterinary practice in Greensburg in 1961. He was a 50 year pin member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, First United Methodist Church of Greensburg. His professional memberships consisted of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Doc also served on the USD 422 Board of Education for many years. On August 26, 1956, he married Charlene Sue Richardson. Together, they built a family of four boys. As they grew up, The Boy Scouts of America was a place they served together as he was a Cub Master and she was a Den Mother for years. ‘Doc’ was passionate about working with horses and cattle. He was a horse breeder for many years. Telling stories and having a good laugh was his true gift. He never left the house without his hat. Charlene preceded him in death on August 19, 2011. Robert is survived by four sons, Clinton Skaggs and wife, Heather; Curt Skaggs; Chad Skaggs and wife, Stephanie, and Clayton Skaggs, and six grandchildren, Hayden Skaggs, Delaney Hart and husband Preston, Slater Skaggs, Janae Skaggs, Colton Skaggs and Jocelyn Skaggs, and a great-granddaughter Olive Hart. Graveside Services and Celebration of Robert’s life with Military Honors will be 10:30 am Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Tom Walters presiding. A visitation will be Friday 5:00-7:00 pm at Fleener Funeral Home, Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to the Friends of Education Charitable Trust in care of Fleener Funeral Home, PO Box 41, Greensburg, KS 67054-0041.
